The fourth week of May is National Frozen Yogurt Week, and even if it’s a pretty small celebration, there’s no reason you can’t celebrate it at home with your family! Frozen yogurt is a wonderfully healthy alternative to ice cream, and in some ways it is even more versatile. There are many places to purchase frozen yogurt, and if you are feeling adventurous, you can make your own, complete with your own toppings. Frozen yogurt contains yogurt or a similar dairy product and it can contain as little as half the fat that is found in ice cream. When it has active cultures living within it, it can be very healthy to consume, and it can help your body protect against imbalances of bacteria in your body as well as infections. To make your own frozen yogurt, start by straining six cups of yogurt through cheesecloth, something that should leave you with about 3 cups of solid yogurt. Mix in about three-fourth of a cup of sugar and whatever flavorings that you’d like to add, and then stir until the sugar is dissolved. After the mixture has sat in the refrigerator for one hour, freeze it in an ice cream maker. You’ll find that you can add any type of flavoring to the yogurt that you please. For something specifically summery and sweet, think about using in season fruits like strawberries or peaches. If you prefer tastes that are slightly less sweet, what about green tea or honey?
